Independent Medical Evaluation (IME)

An Independent Medical Evaluation (IME) is a psychiatric assessment requested for a legal, insurance, disability, or employment matter. The evaluator reviews the available information, conducts an examination when appropriate, and prepares an independent opinion about the questions identified by the requesting party.

An IME does not provide treatment, medication management, or a continuing doctor-patient relationship. Before the evaluation begins, the examinee receives an explanation of the purpose of the evaluation and the limits of confidentiality.

When an Independent Psychiatric Evaluation May Be Needed

Employers, insurers, attorneys, and other organizations may request an IME when they need an independent psychiatric opinion. Common reasons include:

• Disability and long-term disability claims
• Workers’ compensation claims involving mental health concerns
• Personal injury or other civil litigation
• Fitness-for-duty and return-to-work questions
• Questions about diagnosis, causation, prognosis, or functional limitations

What the Evaluation May Include

The scope depends on the referral question and the records provided. An independent psychiatric medical evaluation may include:

• Review of relevant medical, psychiatric, employment, and legal records
• A psychiatric interview focused on symptoms, history, functioning, and the referral question
• A mental status examination
• Psychological testing or rating scales when clinically appropriate
• A written report addressing the opinions requested in the referral

Who Conducts the Evaluation?

Independent psychiatric evaluations are conducted by a qualified mental health professional with the training and experience needed for the matter being reviewed. The evaluator provides an independent opinion and does not advocate for the requesting party or the examinee.

Reports and Confidentiality

The report is prepared for the party that requested the evaluation. Information shared during the evaluation may be included in that report. The examiner will explain how records, interview information, and the final report will be handled before the appointment.
